Mallorca council blocks cap on soaring shop rents

Mallorca Island Council has blocked a proposed cap on steep shop-rent rises in areas under heavy tourism and property pressure. The vote in Palma on 10 September went against MÉS, with PP, Vox and El PI voting it down. MÉS said viable local businesses with customers could be forced to close when they cannot afford a rent increase.

The party had called for measures to shield neighbourhood shops from mounting premises costs, tourism-driven change and overcrowding. Its proposal described the rises as abusive.

Two parts of MÉS motion pass

Councillors did approve two parts of the motion. One recognises local trade as an essential part of life in Mallorca’s towns and neighbourhoods.

The other calls for a review of measures that allow commercial premises to be converted into homes. MÉS spokeswoman Catalina Inés Perelló said the rejected rent measure concerned businesses that are already working and serving customers, but may still have to shut because of higher rents.

Local focus for public contracts

The council also backed MÉS’s plan for responsible, local public procurement. Under the proposal, public spending should be judged on more than price, including its effect on Mallorca, working conditions, the environment and the island’s business network.

Where possible, the plan favours local criteria, local products, less waste, a circular economy and energy efficiency. Perelló said every euro spent by the council should help strengthen Mallorca businesses, support small and medium-sized firms, create decent work and reduce the environmental impact of public activity.
