Spain shopping strike on 11 November: skip fuel too

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

On Mallorca, Spain, consumer group Facua wants shoppers to buy nothing for 24 hours on 11 November and skip filling up with fuel. The call is part of a shopping strike across Spain, alongside a planned general strike. Facua-Consumers in Action also wants people to avoid booking new services that day.

That includes putting off new contracts or tariff changes with electricity, gas and telecoms providers or banks. Facua says the protest is a response to lost spending power as housing, food, electricity and petrol prices climb. It also points to the cost of mortgages and says families are finding it harder to afford basic needs.

For anyone on Mallorca taking part, the request is to delay purchases, fuel stops and new service arrangements for the day. Facua says rising costs and the housing crisis are deepening inequality. It is calling on public authorities, politicians and business organisations to take action to secure decent living conditions.
