Mallorca shops and markets: three new guides for councils
Mallorca, Spain: three new guides give councils ways to support local shops, markets and produce. The Mallorca Island Council published them on Monday, 5 October, and presented them to councillors responsible for trade and economic development. The guides are mainly for council staff and specialists, rather than shopkeepers themselves.
One guide covers local shops, with advice on making them more visible and helping them adapt to changes in trade. Across the three guides, the ideas include digital tools, marketing and closer links between shops and producers, both online and offline.
The market guide looks at how councils can strengthen Mallorca’s markets and draw more attention to them. The third sets out ways to promote local products and connect them with customers.
The guides grew out of nine meetings held since the Mallorca Advisory Council for Products and Trade was set up. Oriol Cesena, a University of Girona professor with more than 20 years’ experience in trade projects, led that work. The island council says each municipality can adapt the advice to its circumstances; it has not announced changes to any particular market or shop.
