Mallorca sick leave: minister backs faster recovery

In Palma, Mallorca, sick leave is under scrutiny: Balearic labour minister Catalina Cabrer backs medical procedures intended to help ill workers recover and return to work sooner. Speaking on Tuesday 13 October, she points to agreements with Spanish mutual insurers, known as mutuas, to carry out the procedures.

Cabrer is responding to a question from Socialist deputy Llorenç Pou about a proposal by People’s Party leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo. He wants tighter checks on sick leave and, in some cases, to let the insurers clear employees to return to work. Cabrer instead focuses on procedures to speed recovery and the medical clearance that follows.

Work absence is also on the agenda for the Balearic hospitality industry. Its collective agreement provides for a body to monitor absences. Cabrer says the issue needs to be discussed.
