Mallorca sick leave: PSIB moves to protect workers’ pay

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

In Palma, Mallorca, sick pay takes centre stage on Tuesday, 13 October: the PSIB wants workers to keep their wages and rights when they take sick leave. The Balearic parliament will debate the Socialists’ proposal in a sitting that starts at 10.00. No bills are on the agenda.

A dispute over sick leave

PSIB parliamentary spokesman Iago Negueruela accused People’s Party (PP) leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo of attacking sick leave. Feijóo calls it absenteeism, Negueruela said, while the Socialists see overwork and excessive strain. The PSIB proposal opposes the change to sick-leave rules that it says the PP wants.

Tourism and housing on the agenda

The PSIB will also press the Balearic government to make tackling tourist overcrowding a goal of its Sustainability Pact. It says the pact’s committee has yet to take a single measure to reduce it. Socialist members plan to question government ministers about housing up to five times.

Parliament will also debate a Unidas Podemos proposal concerning the control tower at Menorca Airport. Balearic president Marga Prohens will miss the sitting: she is travelling to Brussels for the European Week of Regions and Cities.
