Mallorca teacher vote: Sidib backs STEI, runs no list
On Mallorca and across the Balearic Islands, the Independent Teachers’ Union of the Balearics (Sidib) is backing STEI instead of putting forward its own list in December’s election for boards representing teachers outside universities. Some Sidib members will stand on STEI’s lists, the two unions said in a joint statement on 4 November 2026.
The unions say joining forces will give them more weight in talks for temporary teachers, whom they describe as the most insecurely employed group in teaching. They want more secure jobs, pay equal to that of permanent teachers, access to all leave entitlements and a better route into the profession.
Their wider demands include spending 6% of gross domestic product on education, cutting paperwork and reducing class sizes. They also call for pay to keep pace with the consumer price index, better school buildings, less stress and exhaustion for teachers, retirement at 60, stronger Catalan teaching in schools and better career prospects. For now, these are demands the unions plan to bring to the table ahead of December’s vote.
