Palma single-use cups spark Patron Saint festival row

Palma’s Patron Saint celebration is facing questions over possible single-use cups. MÉS per Palma raised the issue on 25 September 2026 and has asked Palma City Council for details of the containers used at the event. The party says their use may have breached the rules.

It wants to know what kind of cups were supplied, what they cost, how they were collected and what steps were taken to prevent waste. MÉS has also requested contract papers, supplier conditions and legal or technical reports showing that the containers complied with regulations.

Neus Truyol, the party’s spokesperson, said the issue went beyond cups and asked whether the council followed the same rules it expects from residents, businesses and organisations. MÉS also wants to know what material the cups were made from, whether they were reusable or disposable, what collection system was put in place and what happened to them afterwards.

MÉS says the Balearic waste law requires public events to use alternatives to disposable cups and to run a deposit system aimed at stopping them being discarded. The party added that Palma’s Local Waste Prevention Plan calls for measures to cut the environmental impact of events, prevent waste and encourage reusable options.

The information request is intended to establish which cups were used and what waste-prevention measures Palma City Council took.
