Mallorca plan to protect small landlords from unpaid rent

Mallorca’s small landlords could get legal protection when tenants fail to pay rent or leave damage behind: the socialist PSIB plans to take the proposal to the Mallorca Island Council next week. Amanda Fernández, head of the party’s Mallorca branch, announced it in Palma, Mallorca, on Wednesday 4 November.

The plan would distinguish people letting out a small number of homes from large property owners and investment funds. It would also seek more affordable homes, stronger action against illegal holiday lets and the use of empty properties. The party wants the council and local authorities to work more closely together. If the council refuses to tackle housing, the PSIB wants local authorities to be able to pursue their own measures.

The socialists say rising rents are making it harder for young people to find a home and are pushing residents out of their towns. Legal protection for small landlords remains a proposal, not an agreed rule.

The party also plans a separate motion next week on pensions and public services. Its council group spokeswoman, Catalina Cladera, renewed her call for council vice-president Pedro Bestard to be dismissed, accusing him of using official vehicles for personal trips.
