Spain urged to boost social housing and rent help
Spain’s ombudsmen want more social housing and help with rent: they say an affordable home can protect people from poverty. National ombudsman Ángel Gabilondo and his regional counterparts approved a ten-point set of proposals on Friday, 30 October, at a meeting on La Palma, Spain.
More homes and funding
They want more social and publicly supported homes. They also call for planning rules to reflect the housing needs of a growing population, and for more public money to build and maintain homes.
Rent help and holiday lets
The proposals include rent assistance and closer supervision of holiday lets. The ombudsmen also want simpler rules and priority for people in particularly vulnerable situations.
They say access to housing is a major public concern and urge the authorities to make any legal changes needed to put housing policies into effect. Their warning is stark: once people fall into poverty or social exclusion, it is extremely hard to get out.
