Mallorca social security office: 11 staff for 40 posts
Palma, Mallorca: The Balearic Islands’ main social security service centre runs with just 11 staff for 40 posts, the union CSIF warns on 28 October 2026. It says the latest transfer round leaves 149 posts vacant at the National Social Security Institute across the islands. Thirty-two officials have secured jobs on the Spanish mainland and will leave the Balearics.
Palma loses staff as other offices face cuts
The institute’s provincial office in Palma is losing 12 workers. Caiss 1, the city’s Social Security Information and Service Centre, is losing ten administrative staff.
CSIF says the institute is considering taking work away from offices in Calvià and Llucmajor, also on Mallorca, to keep the Palma service running. The union warns that the staff shortages could bring services to a halt.
Three maritime offices left without staff
The latest transfers also leave every post vacant at the Social Marine Institute offices in Eivissa, Alcódia and Maó, according to CSIF. With no staff of their own, the offices cannot provide their usual service to workers and pensioners in the fishing and maritime sector.
The transfer round does not reduce overall staffing at the General Social Security Treasury, but CSIF says its workforce has not grown enough to make up for retirements. The union blames low pay and the high cost of living in the Balearic Islands for the wider shortages. It is calling for a higher island allowance and urgent lists of temporary staff to fill the vacancies.
