Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, shares an eclipse-day surge with its neighbouring islands: 2,116,491 residents and visitors are there on 12 August. The all-time record comes a day earlier, when the count reaches 2,117,026. The Balearic Statistics Institute (Ibestat) published the figures on Wednesday.

The peak comes before the eclipse

The islands had about 1.2 million residents at the end of July, according to Spain’s National Statistics Institute. That means around 850,000 people who experienced the eclipse were visitors.

The count falls after 12 August, reaching 1.9 million by the end of the month. In 2025, August’s peak came earlier, on 6 August.

Mallorca records 34 emergency incidents

Expecting large numbers of people, the Balearic government prepared a safety plan that also aimed to protect natural areas. It included proposed controls on access and traffic at busy sites, special measures in the Serra de Tramuntana and plans for 26 official viewing areas across Mallorca, Menorca, Eivissa and Formentera.

Around 3,000 personnel took part in the operation, with up to 2,147 working at the same time during its busiest hours. The 112 emergency coordination centre recorded 46 incidents on 12 August, including 34 on Mallorca — fewer than on the same dates in previous years. Roads also carried fewer vehicles than usual.
