Mallorca: PP mayors back Balearic solar park freeze

New solar parks on rural land across the Balearic Islands are on hold while a new plan identifies the areas best suited to them. PP mayors defended the regional government's moratorium in Palma on Thursday, 24 September. Llorenç Perelló, spokesman for the PP mayors' committee, rejected criticism from PSIB MP Carles Bona.

Perelló said the need for more renewable energy was not in dispute. But he argued that the shift to clean power must not bring unplanned use of rural land or leave municipalities and their neighbours out of the process.

The mayors say large solar projects proposed for rural land have worried people in some towns. They insist the pause is not a brake on renewable energy, but a way to balance clean-power production with protection for land, landscapes and local communities.

Before more rural plots are used, the group wants solar panels prioritised on building roofs, car parks with solar canopies, industrial land and other spaces already altered by development. Perelló said more clean energy and protection for rural land could go together with planning, order and common sense.
