Eivissa, on Ibiza: a solar scheme offers households and small businesses an estimated reduction of up to €300 a year on their electricity bills. Eivissa City Council is urging people to sign up by Monday 9 November. The Balearic Energy Institute is behind the shared-power project, which uses panels on the roof of the Cas Serres car park.

What it costs

A household pays €100 a year for its allotted one kilowatt of power. The council says participants could see their electricity bills fall by an estimated €300 a year; the annual fee is a separate cost. They need no panels of their own, building work or upfront investment.

Power reaches participants through the existing electricity network, and the benefit appears automatically on their bills. Surplus power is credited too. There is no need to switch supplier or pay for installation or maintenance.

Who can take part

The rooftop installation has a capacity of 100 kilowatts. The council uses 30 kilowatts, leaving 70 for up to 49 homes and seven small businesses.

Applicants must hold an electricity contract with a meter no more than five kilometres from the installation. Businesses can take three kilowatts for €300 a year, while small shops with low electricity use can apply for one kilowatt. Households facing financial hardship get priority.
