Sóller sick leave row: workers' reps blame overwork

Sóller, Mallorca: Workers on sick leave are being publicly blamed for problems with a municipal service, their works council says on 25 October. The council at public company Sóller 2010 rejects that blame and urges management to look at what is going wrong. In a statement circulated by the UGT union, it points instead to how the service is run.

The works council says it has criticised the company's handling of the service since 2022. Overtime, first presented as a temporary measure for the summer, has become routine, it says, covering gaps in how work is organised.

The council links many current absences to muscle and joint problems caused by exhaustion, repeated overexertion and poor working conditions. Some jobs meant for two people fall to one worker, it says. It wants lasting changes to working conditions so staff can do their jobs and the public can get a reliable service.
