Sóller tourism and housing: Socialists attack PP
On Mallorca, Sóller has thousands of places for tourists and a population of around 13,000: the opposition Socialists say the PP-run council has failed to tackle pressure on housing and roads. Amanda Fernández, the Socialist candidate to lead the Mallorca Island Council, made the accusation at a meeting with party members and supporters in Sóller on Friday, 2 October. She said tourist pressure showed in traffic jams, difficulty finding a home and the loss of traditional shops.
Fernández said the council had yet to set out clear action to address those problems. She also called for more transparency, pointing to judicial proceedings involving the mayor and current or former members of the town government.
As an alternative to the PP, Fernández said the Socialists would talk with associations, traders, young people, families and older people. Local Socialist spokesman Jaume Mateu said Sóller was worse off after almost eight years of PP administrations. He cited housing, tourist pressure and jams on roads into town, and said his party had put forward proposals from opposition.
