Mallorca’s Sóller train: three held over theft attempts
Mallorca: Police arrest three women after spotting suspected theft attempts at the Sóller train station in Palma on Monday. The women run in different directions when one notices officers watching them.
Two passengers targeted
Spain’s National Police say one woman tried to take a phone and wallet from an older man waiting for the train. The other two appeared to keep watch and distract him. When the attempt failed, the three changed platforms.
There, police say, one woman tried to open another passenger’s backpack while the others watched the area and distracted her. The passenger later told officers she had found her bag open and about 200 euros missing. Police have not said whether the three women took the money.
A brief escape
Officers stopped two women before they left the station. The third got away at first but was later found and arrested. Police suspect the women of attempted theft and belonging to a criminal group.
The arrests followed surveillance by the National Police’s theft unit in Palma. Set up in May, its roughly ten officers investigate pickpocketing in busy places including Playa de Palma, Bellver Castle and central Palma. The unit has made more than 50 arrests since it began work.
