Mallorca's Son Bordils bought for farm trials
Mallorca’s Son Bordils estate in Inca, Mallorca, is set to become a base for farm trials after the Balearic government buys it for five point one million euros. Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment Minister Joan Simonet signed the sale deed with its owners at a notary’s office in Palma on Wednesday, 4 November 2026. The government says the estate will be used for crop and livestock research and training.
One estate for fieldwork
Until now, the Balearic Institute for Agri-food and Fisheries Research and Training (Irfap) has carried out its agricultural trials at different sites. Son Bordils gives it a dedicated place to bring some of that work together. The estate has farmland, agricultural buildings, electricity and an authorised borehole.
Water, crops and livestock
The estate’s proximity to the sewage treatment plant in Costitx, Mallorca, and the irrigation reservoir in Inca will allow researchers to study the use of treated water for farming. Other possible trials include crops suited to the islands’ climate, more efficient water use and the conservation of local varieties. Livestock studies could cover animal health, welfare and native breeds.
Farmers and livestock keepers could also use Son Bordils for practical training and demonstrations. The government is considering joint projects with universities, research centres and farming organisations to help put research findings to work on farms.
