Palma's Son Castelló pavements get €421,682 revamp

New asphalt and more than 550 metres of kerbs now line Gremi Ferrers in Son Castelló, Palma, after a €421,682 pavement overhaul. Palma City Council said on Monday that work between Gran Vía Asima and Gremi de Tintorers is complete. The scheme also adapts bus stop 1033 and changes slopes to improve access.

Asphalt replaces paving slabs

Workers removed the old kerbs and paving slabs, replacing them with compacted asphalt. The council says the new surface is tougher, lasts longer and makes pavement repairs and upkeep easier.

The work includes textured and directional paving, as well as changes to the pavement gradient. Overhead telecommunications and low-voltage power lines have been put underground, while renewed street drains are intended to carry rainwater away more effectively.

Existing tree pits have also been enlarged. The council says this gives trees more room to grow and aims to stop roots damaging or distorting the pavement.

First step in wider Son Castelló works

Infrastructure councillor Belén Soto called the Gremi Ferrers project a pilot scheme and the first step in a gradual renewal of pavements across the Son Castelló industrial estate.

Palma is also resurfacing roads there with Emaya as part of works to separate the estate's utility networks. The wider programme, worth around €16 million, has renewed 210,000 square metres of asphalt, installed more than 17 kilometres of wastewater networks and renewed more than 26.8 kilometres of drinking-water pipes.
