46,000 cars: Palma roundabout rebuild starts

The roundabout beside the ITV station on Son Castelló industrial estate in Palma, Mallorca, carries more than 46,000 vehicles a day. On Friday 4 September, the Consell de Mallorca began a €3.7 million rebuild intended to cut the peak-time queues. The work is due to take a year.

The junction sits between the Sóller road and Camí dels Reis, linking Son Castelló, the ITV station, Son Espases University Hospital, the Vía de Cintura and the Sóller road. Its current 55-metre outer diameter cannot handle the volume of traffic, the Consell says.

A larger junction with bypass lanes

The roundabout will grow to an outer diameter of 85 metres. New direct access in and out of Son Sardina is planned, along with bypass lanes from Son Castelló and Son Espases so vehicles can avoid the roundabout.

The scheme also includes a car park on Camí de Passatemps. Land will be prepared for a future link between Son Espases and the Sóller road, which Palma Council is due to build later.

Night closures come in the final phase

The project has three phases designed to keep the junction open for as long as possible. Preparatory work takes place outside the traffic area first, followed by the Son Sardina links and bypass lanes. Traffic will not be affected during either stage.

Disruption is expected only when the roundabout itself is enlarged in the third phase. The Consell says there will be occasional traffic impacts and night-time closures, with alternative routes through Son Castelló, towards Son Sardina and via the Valldemossa road.
