Mallorca’s Son Espases University Hospital has more than 60 people waiting to be admitted on Tuesday, 20 October. At 3pm, 161 people are waiting to be seen in A&E, according to the transparency portal of the Balearic Islands health service, IbSalut.

The hospital says Monday’s rain and storm warnings kept many people from travelling there, adding to Tuesday’s backlog. Mondays are usually difficult in A&E, it says, because people often stay away at weekends.

The opening of Hospital Verge de la Salut, with 34 beds, has already freed up space at Son Espases, according to the hospital. Its A&E department sees an average of 450 people a day, and 10 per cent are admitted. The hospital expects the situation to stabilise in the coming hours.
