Son Espases boss backed despite calls to sack her
Mallorca’s health minister has backed the chief of Son Espases Hospital in Palma after Socialists called for her dismissal. Manuela García told Parliament on Tuesday 15 September that Cristina Granados should be judged by her record. The PSIB says the working climate at the hospital has become unbearable for staff and patients.
Amanda Fernández, the Socialist MP, said a dozen senior figures had left Son Espases in six months under Granados’s management. She also raised reports of humiliation and mistreatment, pointing in particular to the departure of the nursing director.
García rejected the suggestion that the nursing chief’s exit was linked to the hospital’s management, saying she left for strictly personal reasons.
The minister pointed to changes made during Granados’s time in charge. They include an allergy service, a stroke unit with beds and round-the-clock paediatric palliative care every day of the year.
García said stroke patients had previously been holding up intensive care and recovery units, but were now receiving better care. She also said more than €20 million had been invested in the surgical area, insisting those results justified her support for Granados.
