Mallorca metro: 10-minute Son Espases link under review
A 10-minute metro trip from Intermodal station in Palma, Mallorca, to Son Espases University Hospital is on the drawing board: the Balearic government starts an environmental review of the proposed line on 22 October. The route would continue beyond the hospital to Es Secar de la Real and Son Serra Perera.
Four new stops on the planned route
The line would run for six kilometres, four of them newly built. It would first use three existing stations — Intermodal, Jacint Verdaguer and Son Costa — before continuing underground through four new stops: Son Hugo/Son Pardo, Son Rossinyol/Son Pacs, Son Espases and Secar de la Real/Son Serra Perera.
The government expects the line to carry three million passengers a year. It says the route would improve rail links to neighbourhoods, business and industrial areas, sports facilities, and health and education sites.
Environmental review comes before final approval
The Balearic Directorate-General for Mobility has sent the project file to the regional environmental authority. It includes the route study, reports from consulted public bodies, objections submitted during the public consultation and responses to them.
The government presented the plan in late March and gave the route study initial approval in April. The environmental review must take place before that study can receive final approval. The announcement gives no date for when the line might open.
