Mallorca's Son Espases nurses get 10 days to change shifts

Mallorca’s Son Espases Hospital in Palma leaves adult-ward nurses just 10 days to change shifts because their monthly rota arrives after the 20th, according to the healthcare union USAE. The union says the late timetable makes it harder for staff to plan work around family life. On 21 October 2026, it announced that it had lodged a complaint with the Labour Inspectorate.

Shifts arrive late, wards can change

USAE says nurses in the adult-ward staffing pool may learn which ward they are working on only a few days before a shift, or even on the day itself. They can also be moved between wards during a shift. The union says staff must keep in touch to find out where they are needed, or whether they need to come in at all.

The late rota also affects requests for reduced hours and leave. USAE says staff must normally make those requests before the 15th of the month, when they may not yet know their shifts for the following month.

Union seeks an annual rota

USAE says it first asked for a shared rota for permanent nurses in the adult-ward pool in 2024 and renewed the request in December 2025. Hospital management rejected it, according to the union, saying it was not workable for adult inpatient care. USAE points to the paediatric staffing pool, which has an annual rota.

The union wants an annual rota for the adult-ward pool too. It says the Labour Inspectorate should examine its complaint.
