Son Espases resignations: Mallorca chief keeps job

Cristina Granados will remain in charge of Son Espases University Hospital in Palma, Mallorca, despite repeated resignations from its management team. The Balearic Government said on Friday, 11 September, that it still had full confidence in her. Spokesman Antoni Costa said she was doing a good job.

Costa pointed to the scale of the hospital, which has nearly 6,000 staff and a budget of 680 million euros. He said its management had improved significantly under Granados.

Nursing director left for personal reasons

Natalia Vallés, Son Espases’s nursing director, announced her resignation on Thursday. Costa said she left for strictly personal reasons, the explanation also given by the Balearic Health Service, IBSalut, for the other departures.

He said the resignations did not show that Granados had a management problem. Every vacant senior post had been filled, he added.

Government flags doctors’ strike

Costa said the bigger concern was the open-ended national doctors’ strike against Sánchez’s government. He said it was heavily affecting waiting lists and, in turn, the health of people in the Balearic Islands.

He also called for Health Minister Mónica García to be dismissed, accusing her of failing to reach an agreement with the doctors’ union.
