Mallorca's Son Espases to restart surgery as A&E eases
At Son Espases University Hospital on Mallorca, 23 patients are waiting for a hospital bed on Wednesday, 4 November, down from 69 on Tuesday: surgery is set to resume on Thursday. The hospital says its accident and emergency department is back to normal after a plan introduced on Tuesday eased the pressure. It suspended planned operations for Wednesday, except cancer surgery and priority cases.
The 23 are patients awaiting admission, not everyone in A&E. At 10am on Wednesday, 83 adults were in the department, according to the Balearic Islands Health Service. On eight days in the past two weeks, Son Espases saw more than 500 emergency patients a day, against an annual average of 475.
The health service says the increase coincides with the start of the respiratory virus season, including flu and Covid. Most patients have been older people with respiratory conditions. To free beds, the hospital brought forward operations for patients already admitted. On Monday, 19 October, Verge de la Salut Hospital also made 34 beds available to take patients with multiple conditions from Son Espases.
