Palma animal transport claim: live and dead animals together

Palma City Council and Athisa, the operator of Palma's Son Reus animal shelter, face a complaint alleging that live animals were carried in the same vehicles as dead ones. The UGT trade union filed its first complaint on 10 September with the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment, after staff at the centre called off their strike. UGT says it has submitted photographs and documents pointing to serious hygiene and biosecurity failings.

The union says carrying live and dead animals together causes “unacceptable” suffering and breaches animal health and welfare rules.

UGT calls for vehicle checks

UGT wants veterinary and hygiene inspections of Athisa's vehicle fleet. It has also asked for sanction and investigation proceedings against Palma City Council and the company.

The union alleges that both failed in their duties to monitor and oversee the service, and breached animal welfare rules.

More action planned

UGT describes the council's handling of the service as irresponsible. It also accuses Athisa of using illegal strike-breaking practices to undermine the workers' stoppage.

The complaint is “only the first step”, the union said. It plans further legal, administrative and public action before labour, health and judicial authorities.
