Son Reus shelter has no sanctions after five checks

Son Reus, Palma’s municipal animal protection centre, has undergone five inspections this year without a sanction case being opened, according to the city council. Palma made the statement on 25 September as it rejected UGT union allegations about the handling of animal carcasses at the centre. The checks were carried out over the past seven months.

Inspections from March to August

The Guardia Civil’s Pactrona service visited Son Reus on 19 and 31 March. The General Directorate for Waste and Circular Economy at the Ministry for Business, Self-Employment and Energy inspected the site on 8 April.

The Balearic Provincial Labour and Social Security Inspectorate also carried out visits on 18 June and 20 August. Palma said none of the inspections led to sanction proceedings.

Cooling equipment and water checks

The council said Son Reus has two cooling units, a refrigeration chamber and a freezing chamber for storing and freezing animal carcasses. Each has measuring equipment, and Palma said the installations were bought recently and meet technical and operational requirements.

Palma also said its municipal laboratory, water supplier Emaya and external firms monitor the quality of water consumed by animals housed at Son Reus. That includes keeping chlorine at healthy, non-toxic levels.

The city said photographs circulated by UGT do not show the procedures used at Son Reus or reflect the centre’s handling of animal carcasses.
