Son Reus shelter: UGT reports carcasses, Legionella

Carcasses are decomposing in a broken fridge and dogs are being given water contaminated with Legionella at Palma’s municipal Son Reus animal shelter, UGT Servicios Públicos alleges. The union lodged a complaint with the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Environment on 25 September. It says it has photographic evidence.

UGT says the fridge has been out of order for more than a year and does not reach or hold the legally required temperature for animal carcasses. That has speeded up decomposition and led to maggots, the union claims.

The shelter is run by concession-holder Athinsa. UGT says its new complaint over hygiene and working conditions comes 15 days after it revealed allegations that live and dead animals had been transported together.

The union also accuses Palma City Council of failing to take political responsibility for the public service. It says the shelter’s management is making staff carry out work outside their job category, and has urged animal welfare groups to take the case public and to court.
