Mallorca animal shelter gets €2m amid neglect claims

€2 million for Son Reus animal shelter in Palma, Mallorca: the city approves upgrades on Wednesday, 30 September, as the UGT union alleges repeated, documented neglect. City government spokesman Llorenç Bauzá defends the shelter’s workers and volunteers, saying they work hard for the animals’ welfare. He says inspections by the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) and the regional Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment ended without sanctions.

Bauzá says care at Son Reus has already improved after upgrades to its facilities and operating theatres, as well as the purchase of new equipment. He urges anyone who suspects neglect to report it to the relevant authority and says he will go with them.

The newly approved funding will pay for further work at the animal shelter, including improvements to its administrative and auxiliary buildings. The project is expected to take ten to 11 months from the award of the contract.
