Palma shuts Son Rossinyol as 120 spaces open nearby
Palma has closed the whole Son Rossinyol site, while making more than 120 parking spaces available three minutes away in the neighbouring Son Castelló industrial estate. The city council announced the move on 4 September, saying it is needed for the growth of the municipal bus operator EMT. Fifty-seven recently bought buses are already in Palma.
EMT has been running from both of its operating centres, Sa Tapia and Son Rossinyol, for more than half a year. Palma has also strengthened bus services to make Son Castelló easier to reach.
The council is now drawing up the construction plan for the ECO/EMT operating centre at Son Rossinyol. The project is planned in two phases. A car park and a new building are due in the second phase, with the car park designed for 768 spaces.
The first phase includes 108 electric charging points for buses using intelligent inverted-pantograph systems, along with offices, service areas and maintenance zones.
The council defended the closure after the Socialists criticised the basic plan for the new EMT depots, saying it did not include parking for workers or people shopping in the industrial estate.
