Mallorca's Son Sant Joan air base gets new commander
Mallorca's Son Sant Joan air base has a new commander: Colonel Miguel Ángel Arranz took charge two weeks ago. On Tuesday, 6 October, Council of Mallorca president Llorenç Galmés welcomed him at a meeting in Palma. Arranz replaces Colonel Carlos de Montemayor.
The new commander also leads the Palma air sector, the Ala 49 air wing and RCC Baleares. He is the military commander of the airports in Palma and Eivissa, too.
At the meeting, Galmés stressed the base's strategic importance to military aviation. Its work includes search and rescue, watching over the sea and supporting military operations. He wished Arranz luck in his new roles.
Arranz joined the armed forces as a pilot in 1991 and has taken part in international missions. From 2020, he served in Belgium as an armaments adviser at Spain's permanent representation to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation Council. He later joined the Spanish Air and Space Force's general staff.
