Mallorca: search resumes for Civil War missing

Specialist teams return to Son Servera, Mallorca, on Tuesday to search for people who disappeared during the Civil War. They will work in the municipal cemetery and on several private properties in the town. The Balearic Government’s Department of the Presidency, Local Cooperation and Coordination of Government Action says the aim is to locate, exhume and identify possible victims.

The new work continues excavations started at Son Servera cemetery in April. Teams had searched several parts of the site using historical research and previously collected witness accounts. They will now examine the cemetery again and extend the investigation to private land identified in the documents and testimonies.

If human remains are found, the specialists will follow the required procedures to recover, examine and identify them. Archaeologists searched the Comellar Fondo area of Son Servera in July but ruled out a mass grave in the area investigated.

The digs are being carried out by a joint team from the Sociedad de Ciencias Aranzadi and Atics. After earlier work on Eivissa and Formentera, the Government is continuing in Son Servera in the hope of identifying victims, returning them to their families and giving them a dignified burial.
