Spain election: Sánchez calls early vote for 29 November
Spain is heading for an early election on 29 November: Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announces his decision at the Moncloa Palace in Madrid on Monday, 5 October. He has informed King Felipe VI, and an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers is expected on Monday to call the vote.
Sánchez says voters face a choice between a far-right turn and another progressive government. But he also acknowledges dissatisfaction with his coalition, admitting it has made mistakes and has not done everything it set out to do.
He points to inequality, public services and access to housing as problems still to tackle. To make progress, he says, he needs renewed public support and a larger progressive majority in parliament.
