Spain election: Prohens wants Sánchez out on 29 November

Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, is heading for an early general election on 29 November: Balearic president Marga Prohens hopes the vote will end Pedro Sánchez’s government. The prime minister announced the election on Monday at Moncloa, the government headquarters in Madrid. Prohens greeted the news with two words: “At last!”

She says Sánchez’s government has abandoned the Balearic Islands. Other regional leaders from her People’s Party welcome the election too. Andalusia’s president, Juanma Moreno, says it is time to give the public a say.

Socialist regional leaders back the election but want a different result. Catalonia’s president, Salvador Illa, stands behind Sánchez. Navarra’s president, María Chivite, hopes to widen the progressive majority so it can pass measures to remove barriers to housing access.
