Mallorca faces a general election on 29 November along with the rest of Spain: Balearic president Marga Prohens says the snap vote could end a government she accuses of abandoning the islands. Prime minister Pedro Sánchez announced the election on Monday morning from the Moncloa palace. Prohens, of the conservative People’s Party (PP), replied on X: “At last!”

Prohens accused Sánchez of using his announcement to attack Spain’s regional governments and the opposition. She called it a message of “polarisation” rather than an institutional statement, and said he had used state institutions for his own interests. In her view, only PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo can lead a change of government.

Her complaint goes beyond the election speech. Prohens says Sánchez’s government has failed to address Balearic demands for funding and has left the islands’ special status, road and rail investment, and transport agreements unresolved. She also blames it for worsening access to housing, saying young people find it harder to secure a home than they did three years ago. She hopes the next government will heed the islands’ demands.
