Spain election week: travel cancellations jump 60%
Spain’s 29 November general election is driving a 60% rise in cancellations for election-week travel compared with nearby weeks in November and December. Online travel agency Destinia reported the figures from Madrid on 26 October. Some people are changing plans to vote in person; others fear they could be appointed to work at a polling station.
The rise affects existing bookings, particularly trips planned for election weekend. But new bookings have continued at the same pace since the election date was announced, Destinia says. Overall demand for travel has not fallen.
A trip booked before the election was called does not automatically excuse someone from polling station duty. Those appointed can make their case to the local electoral board, the Junta Electoral de Zona, which decides each request individually.
If an appointment forces a traveller to cancel, some cancellation insurance policies may cover the cost. Cover depends on the policy’s terms. Destinia advises checking those terms and dealing with any cancellation early, as charges can rise closer to departure.
