40ºC in southern Spain: rain arrives on Sunday

Spain’s heat is set to reach 40ºC in southern areas by Sunday, when a weather front may bring rain to Galicia, Asturias and nearby areas. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) says the late-season heat will begin to ease, although temperatures remain high for the time of year. On Friday, the Cantabrian coast cools while the Mediterranean warms.

Heat holds through Saturday

Temperatures will top 32ºC on the northern plateau on Friday and exceed 35ºC in the north-east, inland Mediterranean areas and southern Canary Islands. Extremadura and Andalusia can expect 36 to 38ºC, with still higher readings in the Guadalquivir Valley. Most of Spain stays dry, though Tenerife and other western Canary Islands could see a shower.

Saturday remains settled. Much of northern Spain reaches 30 to 32ºC, while wide areas of the southern half of the peninsula and Gran Canaria exceed 35ºC. The Guadalquivir Valley could again reach 38 to 40ºC.

Sunday brings a possible change in the north-west, with rain forecast for Galicia and Asturias while dry weather holds elsewhere. Temperatures fall in Galicia, central Spain and the southern half of the peninsula, but rise along the Cantabrian coast. Values above 32ºC are still expected in southern Spain, parts of the eastern Cantabrian coast, the Ebro Valley and parts of the Canary Islands.

Atlantic low brings an uncertain week

A deep Atlantic low-pressure system could change the pattern next week, but AEMET says its route remains unclear. On Monday, temperatures may generally continue to fall, although strong southerly winds could push them up in Galicia and Cantabrian regions, where very strong gusts are possible.

Cloudier, less settled weather is also expected across much of the peninsula on Monday, with locally heavy showers possible. They are more likely in western Spain and the Mediterranean area.

A front may reach the north-west on Tuesday, bringing rain to Galicia, Asturias, western Castile and León and northern Extremadura. Showers are also possible in central Spain, the Mediterranean area and the north-east, where they could be heavy. By Wednesday, the front could bring rain to much of the peninsula except its eastern third, while temperatures fall in the north and west.
