Spain heat returns: 38ºC forecast this weekend
Spain heat is building again, with 36 to 38ºC possible in Badajoz, Seville and Córdoba this weekend. Temperatures start rising on Friday, when parts of the Guadalquivir Valley may exceed 36ºC. Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, says a settled high-pressure pattern will bring little or no rain to most of the country.
Aemet spokesman Rubén del Campo said: “Summer is back.”
Hotter days across Spain
Saturday and Sunday should bring mostly clear skies. The north-east, central Spain and southern Canary Islands may reach 32 to 34ºC, while western and southern Galicia, Extremadura, western Castilla-La Mancha and western Andalusia are set to pass 34ºC.
The Strait of Gibraltar area and Melilla are the exceptions, with more cloud and a chance of light rain.
The heat is expected to strengthen into Monday and Tuesday. Daytime temperatures across much of Spain will sit 5 to 10ºC above normal, and more than 10ºC above normal in parts of the north.
Heat holds into next week
Inland Galicia, the Ebro Valley and broad parts of the north-east could see 34 to 36ºC. On Tuesday, Pamplona and Huesca may hit 35ºC, while Zaragoza and Lleida could approach 37 to 38ºC.
Central and southern Spain are also forecast to reach 34 to 36ºC on Monday and Tuesday. The Tagus, Guadiana and Guadalquivir valleys could again reach 36 to 38ºC.
The Canary Islands will remain hot at the start of the week. Parts of Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria may exceed 36ºC, with 32 to 34ºC across large areas of Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma.
A front may reach Spain’s far north on Tuesday, bringing light rain and falling temperatures in northern Galicia and along the Cantabrian coast. From Wednesday, temperatures are likely to ease in the northern half of the peninsula, while the south changes little at first. Light rain is also possible around the Cantabrian Sea, but most of Spain is expected to stay largely dry through the week.
