Spain home swaps jump 29% to nearly 40,000 this summer

Nearly 40,000 home swaps took place in Spain between June and August 2026, up 29.4% on the same period last year. The exchanges produced 230,000 overnight stays, a rise of 22.6%, and involved more than 130,000 users, 27% more than a year earlier. HomeExchange reported the figures in its summer tally, which gives no separate total for Mallorca or the Balearic Islands.

Domestic swaps lead the way

More than half of all exchanges — 54.6% — were between members living in Spain. That put domestic travel ahead of exchanges involving travellers from traditional source markets including France, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Catalonia, Andalusia, Euskadi, the Valencian Community and Galicia drew the greatest demand from Spanish members. Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, San Sebastián and Bilbao recorded the most stays among cities.

Overseas choices span five countries

For exchanges abroad, Spanish members mainly chose France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany and the United States. HomeExchange Spain spokeswoman Pilar Manrique said the results show home swapping is becoming a regular accommodation option in Spanish travel habits.
