Spain housing decrees: Sánchez hopes for Congress win
Two housing decrees face a vote in Spain’s Congress: Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez says he is reasonably optimistic they will pass. Speaking in Madrid, Spain, on Wednesday, 30 September, after meeting French President Emmanuel Macron, he urged parliamentary groups to reach an agreement.
Sánchez said his government had spent many months on the first decree and taken up numerous proposals from other parties. It would give public authorities more ways to tackle access to housing, which he called one of the public’s biggest concerns.
The second decree has been in the works for less time. It raises the question of extending rental contracts — a debate Sánchez said Spain would have to face sooner or later.
Sánchez also answered the People’s Party, which has called him a “traitor”. If that means betraying the interests of funds that speculate in housing, he said, he is glad to do it. He accused politicians linked to the party of failing to act over Maricarmen’s eviction.
