Spain rent vote puts €624m tenant saving at risk

Tenants in Spain could save €624 million under two government rent decrees, minister Pablo Bustinduy tells the Congress of Deputies in Madrid on Friday, 2 October. He is defending measures to make rental contracts more stable and allow them to be extended. A vote against the decrees would stop that saving reaching tenants, he says.

Bustinduy accuses PP, Vox and Junts of putting big property interests ahead of renters. He says five million people in Spain live in rented homes and face contracts coming to an end. Extending those contracts, he argues, is the main demand of a movement pressing for housing to be addressed in parliament.

For Bustinduy, the vote is a dispute over who benefits, not a matter of deals between parties. He calls the measures a first step towards making life easier for working people. No voting result was reported.
