Spain summer heat holds as 40ºC nears in south

Spain’s unseasonal summer heat is set to hold through the rest of the week, with temperatures nearing 40ºC in the Guadalquivir Valley on Saturday. The State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, says much of the country will stay largely dry. No separate temperature forecast has been issued for Mallorca.

On Wednesday, temperatures across much of inland Spain and the Canary Islands are expected to sit 5 to 10ºC above the usual level for the time of year. Parts of northern Spain could be more than 10ºC above normal. Badajoz and Seville may reach 38ºC or more, while southern Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote could exceed 35ºC.

Thursday brings another mostly dry, settled day, although isolated showers cannot be ruled out in the western Canary Islands, particularly Tenerife. Temperatures will rise sharply along the Cantabrian coast, while much of inland Spain is expected to top 32ºC. Extremadura, parts of Andalusia and wide areas of the Canaries could pass 36ºC.

The heat shifts east on Friday as Galicia and the Cantabrian coast cool down. Zaragoza could reach 37ºC, Madrid 34ºC, and Badajoz and Seville up to 38ºC. Skies are expected to be clear, apart from a chance of isolated showers in Tenerife and other western Canary Islands.

Saturday remains very warm in central and southern Spain, with more than 35ºC expected and temperatures close to 40ºC possible in the Guadalquivir Valley. A fresher Levante wind will bring lower readings in eastern Spain. By Sunday, the cooler air is more likely to affect the west, though much of the country will still be hot.

A front could bring rain to parts of northern and western Spain from Monday. AEMET says temperatures are likely to move closer to seasonal levels next week, although the Canary Islands are expected to remain warm.
