Spain adds 95,900 unemployed despite record jobs
Spain has 95,900 more people out of work in the third quarter, even as 73,600 more people have jobs. Employment reaches a record 22,852,600 by the end of summer, according to figures released by Spain’s National Statistics Institute on Tuesday, 27 October 2026.
The number of unemployed people stands at 2,591,200. The unemployment rate rises to 10.18%, up three-tenths of a percentage point from the previous quarter. All the employment growth between July and September comes from people from abroad, while the increase in jobs is the smallest for a third quarter since 2019.
Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo focuses on the longer trend. On figures adjusted for seasonal changes, more than 22,700,000 people are working. Employment has grown for 25 consecutive quarters, he says, and around 465,000 more people have jobs than a year ago, including 120,000 young people.
Cuerpo also points to households: in 190,000 more than a year ago, every economically active member has a job, bringing the total to 12 million. He acknowledges the rise in unemployment but says the rate remains the lowest for a third quarter since 2007.
