Palma sports fair: 180 free events fill Son Moix

More than 180 free sports activities will take over the Son Moix sports complex in Palma, Mallorca, on 19 and 20 September. The fair runs from 10.00 to 14.00 and again from 16.30 to 20.00, with ten themed areas for all ages. It also marks 50 years of the Son Moix Municipal Sports Palace.

Palma City Council is bringing back the Sports Fair after 13 years away. More than 100 sports bodies, federations, clubs, gyms and associations will put on displays and sessions where people can try different disciplines.

From cricket to underwater rescue

The velodrome will host track cycling, athletics, speed skating, rhythmic gymnastics, archery and slingshot shooting, as well as Mega Hyathlon. The football pitch will stage cricket, rugby, football and American football, plus a Lliga Insuperables match.

Palma Futsal face ElPozo Murcia in the pavilion. Anaya Mayurqa Voley Palma play Algaida VC in volleyball, while Azul Marino meet Alba Berlin in basketball. The pools will offer water polo, synchronised swimming, diving, swimming, canoeing, breath-hold diving, introductory scuba sessions and a Guardia Civil underwater-rescue display.

Elsewhere, the Guardia Civil, Policía Nacional and Bombers de Palma will show their equipment at the calisthenics and mini-football area, where the Army will set up an obstacle course. The velodrome car park will have car, motorbike and Segway displays, food trucks, exhibitors and the Isla Race.

Three stages and 50 years of Son Moix

Three stages around the complex will run a continuous programme led by gyms, clubs and local groups. Sessions include HIT Pilates, Body Combat, Zumba, yoga, spinning, swing and cardiopulmonary resuscitation workshops.

An open-air exhibition will trace Son Moix’s history through archive images. Architect Fèlix Gili Juan designed the complex; its first stone was laid in 1973 and it officially opened on 17 September 1976. Since then, it has hosted national and international competitions, including the 1993 World Swimming Championships and the 2004 World Triathlon Championships.
