Eivissa opens €3.6m sports centre for basketball
Eivissa has opened the Paco Vázquez sports centre, a €3.6 million venue built to make room for more training sessions and competitions. The City Council of Eivissa and the Consell d’Eivissa inaugurated it on Monday afternoon, 8 September, as part of the Plan Eivissa, ciudad del deporte project.
The Consell d’Eivissa contributed nearly €1.6 million, including Capitality funds. Mayor Rafa Triguero said more than 500 registered children and young people play basketball in Eivissa and can now use the new facilities.
The centre is named after basketball player Paco Vázquez, who called it one of his greatest honours to have a sports venue in his city carry his name.
The building is intended for clubs, educational centres and the wider public. Its main court can host federation competitions, while the layout can be divided into up to three cross-courts for basketball or one full-length basketball court.
The centre stands beside Eivissa’s old cemetery. A planted strip and preserved cypress trees are intended to reduce the impact of the new building on its surroundings.
