Squatters' help office gets four posts, no start date

In Palma, Mallorca, housing minister José Luis Mateo says the Balearic government has approved a staffing change to create four posts for a planned squatters' help office — but gives no opening date. He told parliament on Tuesday, 3 November, that the office would advise and support people affected by the illegal occupation of homes.

Mateo said his department had begun the steps needed to create the posts and wanted the office to open “as soon as possible”. Vox MP Patricia de las Heras, whose party agreed the office with the government, said it already had legal backing and a budget. She said it still needed lawyers and had yet to open.

The exchange turned to the wider housing crisis. Mateo defended the government's housing measures, saying results did not come overnight. Socialist MP Mercedes Garrido challenged his record and said monthly rents had risen from 800 to 1,500 euros.
