Mallorca: 200-plus-year-old kerb row reaches prosecutors
A stone kerb said to be more than 200 years old has been removed during roadworks on Paborde Jaume street in Santa Maria del Camí, Mallorca. A neighbour has taken the matter to the Balearic Islands Public Prosecutor’s Office. His complaint, made public on Thursday, 29 October, also says the works put pedestrians at risk.
The Mallorca Island Council has inspected the street. According to the neighbour, an inspector from its Technical and Cultural Heritage Service sent the town hall a report seeking a way to repair the street while keeping the stone sections that remain.
The man had already complained to the Provincial Labour and Social Security Inspectorate. The Association for the Recovery of Old Town Centres (ARCA) and another local woman also urged the town hall not to remove the old paving and reported damage to several houses. Two formal requests to the town hall sought the works file and information on where the removed stones had gone.
The complainant says workers began pouring concrete on Wednesday after laying a paved channel down the middle of the street. He believes it sits too high and could cause flooding. He wants prosecutors to ensure someone oversees the works; there is no word on whether they will act.
