Mallorca roadworks spark row over Santa Maria stone kerbs
Street works in Santa Maria del Camí on Mallorca have removed stone from old kerbs: heritage group ARCA wants it put back in the new road surface. On 8 October 2026, the group also calls on the local council to keep the kerb still in place on Paborde Jaume street.
ARCA says the council replied that the kerbs are not listed in its heritage register. The council also said the Mallorca Island Council subsidises the works and directed ARCA to the Public Sector Procurement Platform for the paperwork, according to the group.
ARCA argues that street works should not cost the town its character or historic features. It says similar removals have happened in Palma, Campos and Inca, where councils have usually tried to put mistakes right.
The group reminds mayor Nicolau Canyelles that many features worth protecting are absent from heritage registers. It wants the council to update its register, save the kerb on Paborde Jaume street and return the stone already removed.
