Storm Adam has hit the Balearic Islands hard. On 27 October, Spain’s Council of Ministers included areas in the region in a decision covering 45 areas across the country, opening the way for aid over damage from recent emergencies.

The decision declares the areas seriously affected by civil protection emergencies — a designation previously known as “disaster zones”. It covers fires and floods between 13 September and 20 October across nine regions. Government spokesperson Elma Saiz said it would allow aid for people and institutions that suffered damage, alongside help from regional and local authorities.

Saiz said Storm Adam struck the Balearics and Spain’s Mediterranean mainland coast particularly hard. The storm killed seven people overall.

For Mallorca, the announcement leaves two questions unanswered: it does not say which, if any, places on the island are covered, or when aid might arrive.
