Balearic storm warning turns orange as Palma closes parks

A Balearic storm warning for rain and thunderstorms was raised to orange on 20 August, prompting closures in Palma, Mallorca. Palma City Council said Ribera, Can Terrers and Bellver parks would shut at 15:00, followed by the Paseo Marítimo at 18:00.

The Balearic Islands Emergency Service, Emergencias 112, also activated severity index one under the Meteobal plan. The warning had remained at yellow until Thursday afternoon.

Yellow warnings for coastal phenomena remain in force across the Balearic Islands, while Mallorca also has a yellow warning for rissagas. The parks and seafront route will stay closed until the alert ends, subject to weather forecasts, and the Patis Oberts programme has been suspended.

Palma Local Police urged people to take particular care, avoid wooded areas and places where water may collect, check drains and secure objects on balconies and terraces. The council cited the prospect of strong wind gusts and coastal conditions.
